Next-Generation Surgery and Integrated Surgical Care at National Cheng Kung University Hospital

Under the leadership of President Meng-Ru Shen, Dean Jing-Wei Lee, Dean Yan-Shen Shan, and Director of the Department of Surgery E-Jian Lee, National Cheng Kung University Hospital(NCKUH) has made significant investments to establish a cutting-edge Hybrid Operating Center. Centered around this surgical facility, NCKUH has developed a next-generation surgical workflow and care system that integrates artificial intelligence(AI), functional monitoring, advanced imaging, and navigation across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
Preoperatively, we use AI-enhanced imaging to identify and reconstruct critical nerves and blood vessels into 3D visualizations. These anatomical structures are presented on a naked-eye 3D display, allowing physicians and patients to understand complex 3D anatomy. Intraoperatively, we can utilize the pre-printed 3D template of the surgical corridor. Once positioned and aligned on the body, these templates allow for precise placement of implants.
Within this intelligent operating center, neurosurgeons can perform awake craniotomy, enabling real-time monitoring of neurological function during surgery. This technique was awarded the 2024 National Safety and Quality Mark. Chest surgeons can offer lung cancer patients safe and highly accurate ablation procedures. Multi-disciplinary teams can perform simultaneous surgeries to treat patients with severe trauma.
Postoperatively, NCKUH’s surgical intensive care unit developed the i-Dashboard. This real time panel that consolidates and visualizes key medical data to enhance postoperative monitoring and care quality.
The Department of Surgery at NCKU integrated these advanced technologies into a comprehensive care model. Leveraging 3D video recording, fisheye lenses, and panoramic stitching technologies, the hospital produces immersive 3D surgical videos to share Taiwan's surgical expertise globally—amplifying its international impact through localized innovation.
