Transforming Surgery with AI-Enabled 3D Imaging

In 2025, National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) presented the theme “Applications of AI-Driven 3D Imaging in Surgery at the Medical Technology Expo. This showcased our leadership in smart healthcare and precision surgery. The exhibition combined artificial intelligence (AI), advanced imaging technologies, and next-generation surgical systems. It offered a vivid vision of the future operating room and drew significant attention from both medical professionals and the public.

One of the featured innovations was the next-generation high-resolution exoscope system. It redefines conventional surgical microscopy with ultra-high-definition 3D visualization and an expanded field of view, Surgeons can operate with enhanced precision while maintaining ergonomic posture. This significantly reduces fatigue during lengthy procedures. Multiple team members can view the surgical field simultaneously, facilitating education and interdisciplinary collaboration. This establishes a new standard for modern surgical practice.

A major highlight of the exhibition was NCKUH’s pioneering “double hybrid operating room (double hybrid OR)” concept. This advanced environment seamlessly integrates intraoperative CT imaging with cutting-edge surgical infrastructure. It enables real-time imaging, precise navigation, and immediate intervention within a single space. This integration greatly enhances surgical efficiency and safety. The dual hybrid design further expands clinical capabilities, enabling simultaneous or sequential management of complex neurosurgical, cerebrovascular, and trauma cases. It embodies a true paradigm of “imaging-driven decision-making and immediate execution.” This significantly improves patient outcomes and elevates clinical performance.

In addition, the application of AI in medical image reconstruction stood at the core of the exhibition. Advanced AI algorithms rapidly convert CT and MRI data into highly accurate 3D models. This enables detailed preoperative simulation and planning. These lifelike 3D visualizations help surgeons better understand complex anatomical structures. As a result, they can tailor personalized surgical strategies for each patient. Combined with intraoperative real-time image updates and AI-assisted interpretation, surgical decision-making becomes more precise, dynamic, and forward-looking.

Overall, NCKUH’s exhibition demonstrated the deep integration of AI and 3D imaging across the entire surgical workflow. This ranges preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation to postoperative assessment. These tools significantly enhance both the quality and safety of care. The exhibition is not just a display of advanced technologies, but a concrete realization of the future of intelligent surgery. As AI drives innovation in medicine, NCKUH stands at the forefront of precision healthcare. NCKUH leads surgery into a new era of safety, efficiency, and true personalization.
